Henry Cotton and Dai Rees - One Each

October 20th and 21st 1939

Henry Cotton played D.J. Rees last weekend. At the Clyne Club's course at Swansea Cotton won by 5 and 4 over 36 holes. On Sunday, at Cardiff Golf Club, Rees was the winner by one hole, again in a 36 hole test. At Clyne there were 1,500 spectators and at Cardiff 1,300. The balls they played with were auctioned off at over 4 guineas a ball, so the Red Cross benefited by £380-a very useful week-end's work by Cotton and Rees and the many other generous helpers.

AT THE CARDIFF CLUB: D.J.Rees is driving, and Cotton, in the extreme left of the picture, seems to be saying to himself: "That's a pretty useful one to beat". Rees, playing some of best golf, won this 36 holes by one hole.

COTTON PLAYS AN IRON SHOT: It was sparkling golf by both men - particularly at Clyne on the Saturday, for Cotton was round in approximately 64 - 10 shots fewer that the par for the course and Rees only took 67. At Cardiff, where this was taken, in the second round Rees had a 70 and Cotton 71. CONTRAST IN STYLES: Cotton is driving to the 440 yards hole at Cardiff, and by the look of the faces of the crowd this shot, too, is a good one. These two driving pictures bring out the difference in styles, for both are characteristic of the players. The large galleries at both courses were delighted.

COTTON FINDS HIS PUTTING TOUCH: Both played grand golf, driving, chipping and putting. Cotton's win at Clyne was his first in the series of five singles, his putting in the previous matches having let him down a little. At Clyne, he made no mistakes on the greens. The last 9 holes of their 36 at Cardiff were their best, for after each had gone out in 39, Rees was home in 31 and Cotton 32. It was altogether a brilliant weekend.
